These early ones used at least 3000 years ago were usually sand-filled animal bladders. You will find references in later texts to the use of medicine balls advocated by hippocrates, the father of medicine, about 2500 years ago. He recommended the use of round animal skins, which could also be filled with sand, as a way of training athletes or helping them recover from injuries.
